Digitalization and information technologies have had and continue to have a transformative effect on society, technology, and economy as well as on science and academia. The impact of computing is poised to grow disproportionately compared with other domains in the analogue world. The RNCS represents a tightened and streamlined successor organization of the previous competence center computational sciences (CCCS), with raised scientific standards and a minimal administrative overhead to serve as a platform for bottom-up growth of research collaborations around specific ideas which deal with one of the subsequently outlined research areas. Initially, three activity fields have been selected which we believe to optimally balance interdisciplinary research interests across diverse faculties, departments and associated research organizations:
- Machine Learning
- Personalized Medicine
- High-Performance Computing (HPC)
The RNCS provides seed funding (50 kCHF per year) for joint research applications for external funding. It will particularly support joint SINERGIA grant applications, which provide funding for small to medium-sized interdisciplinary collaborative research teams (2-4 PIs). But also other funding opportunities or other calls by the SNF or within EUCOR can be pursued by members of the RNCS.
The chairman of the RNCS is Prof. Dr. O.A. von Lilienfeld, Dept. of Chemistry, University of Basel.
Should you being interested in collaborative research in the general domain of computational sciences or in one of the above listed activity fields, you are cordially invited to get in touch with Prof. von Lilienfeld.
